Eight Ways To Live in Real Joy - Guest Post by Karen Friday

On days when I need a little encouragement, need some spiritual wind for my sails, I go to Karen Friday. She is one of my dear blogging friends and I am so excited to introduce her to this community. Karen is a pastor’s wife, Bible teacher, author, and speaker. She loves the Word, and she always has exactly the truth I’m needing. I hope you are as encouraged by Karen as I am.

Let’s show her our support and appreciation!!!

Is my joy showing through?

Sometimes I move from one season to the next, from one life event to the next, and from one holiday to the next, without realizing the breadth of what’s around me and the depth of what’s inside me.

Almost as if I placed a check mark beside attributes and emotions on a proverbial good list. After all, everyone needs gratitude on Thanksgiving, a giving spirit at Christmas, expectant hope for the new year, a loving heart on Valentine’s Day, worthy worship for the risen Savior on Resurrection Sunday—Easter, and so on.

I mean, who wants to just go through the motions. Not me...although sometimes it feels that way.

But what if the season of our life turns into a cold, hard winter instead of the springtime we yearn for? Or, the life event of an illness or the death of a loved one shakes our world? Or, holidays only remind us of a dysfunctional family or a broken relationship?

Where’s the celebration...the rejoicing in the midst of hurting souls? Are we missing out on real joy?

Because true joy is not affected by our circumstances. Sure, it’s easy to say that and it looks nice on paper. Yet, real joyfulness is often the end result of God’s faithful promises.

Not just what we believe and know about joy, but also how it manifests in our lives—how we live joy.

Unlike photos, there’s no filter for joyful. Oh it would be wonderful to scroll through filters, then choose and apply joy to our souls and lives.

Instead, joy lies beneath the surface and radiates through. You see, God wants to bring a smile back to our face. But more than that. The Lord wants to bring rejoicing back to our soul. The breadth and depth of real joy is found in the Lord—never shaken or taken.

I love powerful refrains in songs and poems. Those words and lines repeated for affect and purpose. So I hope you join in with what I ask of you. After each of our points and corresponding Scripture, repeat the refrain out loud.

8 Ways to Live in Real Joy:

1.)  In God’s redemption.

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” Psalm 51:12

“My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.” Psalm 71:23

Refrain

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken. CLICK TO TWEET

2.)  In God’s works.

“… for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” Psalm 63:7

“For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy.” Psalm 92:4

“Shouts of joy resound in the tents of the righteous. The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things.” Psalm 118:15 CLICK TO TWEET

Refrain

Is my joy showing through?

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken.

3.)  In God’s Word.

“Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.” Psalm 119:111

Refrain

Is my joy showing through?

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken.

4.)  In God’s strength.

“And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10b

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” Psalm 28:7 (NIV)

Refrain

Is my joy showing through?

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken.

5.)  In God’s consolation.

“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” Psalm 94:19 (NIV)

Refrain

Is my joy showing through?

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken.

6.)  In God’s presence.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11

Refrain

Is my joy showing through?

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken.

7.)  In God’s restoration.

“And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” Isaiah 35:10

Refrain

Is my joy showing through?

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken.

8.)  In God’s Son. Jesus Christ.

His birth.

The wise men, “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” Matthew 2:10

Angels proclaimed to the shepherds, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:10b

His resurrection.

Women who visited the empty tomb. “So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.” Matthew 28:8

“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2

Jesus came from glory to the manger…to the cross…to a tomb that couldn’t hold Him, ascending back to heaven’s glory. Oh, what a Savior!

Refrain

Is my joy showing through?

Because there’s no filter for joyful.

And it’s never shaken or taken.

Through God’s redemption, His works in our lives, His Word, His strength, His consolation, His presence, His restoration and in Jesus Christ...we are equipped with everything it takes to not go through the motions.

Instead, we live joy.
